I want to know more about LEDs

LED stands for ‘light emitting diode’ – new electronic technology that produces light. Semiconductor diodes have been used in electric circuitry for many years as switches that conduct when a forward voltage is applied. What’s new is that by incorporating phosphors (similar to that used in fluorescent lamps) in the construction, light can be produced in a very efficient way. A well-constructed LED lamp runs cooler, is much more energy-efficient and lasts far longer than the tungsten halogen lamp or CFL it is intended to replace.

You can learn more about LED technology in our Knowledge section.

Which light temperature should I choose?

LED lamps are available in a variety of different light ‘colours’. Most commonly, the lamps are labelled with a colour temperature which says whether the light composition is warm, neutral or cold. The industry standard description uses ‘degrees Kelvin’ or K, and the term ‘Colour Temperature’ distinguishes between the different types.

Here is an easy colour temperature guide:
– Warm white (best for home lighting): typically, from 2600 Kelvin to 3000 Kelvin
– Neutral White/Cool White (best for office and workspace lighting): typically, 4000 Kelvin to 4500 Kelvin
– Artificial Daylight (for special display applications): typically, above 6000 Kelvin

What are the best features of LED lights?

Compared to halogen lamps and compact fluorescent lamps, LED lamps:

  • Are very energy-efficient, offering significant savings on your electricity bills
  • Are environmentally friendly (no toxic content and low energy use)
  • Have a much longer comparative life to halogen bulbs
  • Operate at lower temperatures, increasing comfort
  • Are highly compatible with mirror-optic systems giving precise lighting effects
  • Compact in size and have an aesthetic design
  • Rugged in construction leading to improved breakage and vibration resistance
  • Unaffected by rapid cycling (compared to CFL)
  • Do not product IR or UV emissions.

Do energy saving products really work?

Yes! However, as with all technologies, they work best when applied in certain circumstances.

To learn more about our energy saving products, visit our Knowledge section.

How can I save money without spending any?

You don’t have to spend lots of money to become more energy efficient. There are simple lifestyle and behavioural changes which can reduce your energy consumption resulting in a lower energy bill.

Simple changes include switching off appliances, making sure you have full loads of washing, hanging your clothes out to dry rather than using a tumble dryer, and only filling the kettle with as much water as you need.

For more energy saving tips, visit our Knowledge section.

How can I reduce my business’s energy consumption?

Businesses can use excessive amounts of energy and keeping track of your energy can reduce your impact on the environment as well as your energy bills. There are numerous ways to make a positive change from big wholesale changes to small cultural changes within the company.

You should consider making improvements to your building’s infrastructure. Huge amounts of energy can be lost through poor insulation, or poor energy control.

At Evergreen Energy, we can design and install energy saving technologies for your office space to help reduce your energy bills and carbon footprint.

If you would like to learn more about what improvements could be made in your building and see what we have done for other businesses, visit our Business website and contact our commercial team.

Remember – getting your staff involved is key to making a real difference to your energy consumption. Unless everyone cares about making a change and are prepared to change their habits, the best equipment and controls won’t make as much of a difference.

How much electricity does a wind turbine generate?

The amount of electricity generated by a wind turbine will vary depending on the size of the turbine and the amount of wind available. Typically, a commercial wind turbine in the UK of the standard size will generate enough electricity for 1,000 – 1,500 homes.

What is the typical lifespan of a wind turbine?

Wind turbines can generate clean, green, renewable energy for up to 25 years. With the average wind turbine paying back the energy used to manufacture it within the first 3-6 months of operation.

What is an energy audit?

The Government’s energy management legislation is placing increasing pressure on organisations to protect natural resources and decrease carbon emissions. An energy audit is a good starting point for businesses and organisations, and should be carried out by a Non-Domestic Energy Assessor. The audit will involve an assessment of your premises and how energy is used.

Following the Energy Audit report, you will be provided with a list of energy conservation measures with the aim to make your business more energy efficient and reducing its impact on the planet. If you have never conducted on energy audit before you could see a significant reduction in your energy bill should you implement the suggested changes.

What is an environmental policy?

An environmental policy is a written statement declaring the company’s stance on managing the environmental effects of the business’ operations. At present it is not compulsory for a company to have an environmental policy in place, however a number of companies are choosing to do so. An environmental policy is essential if you want to go through ISO 14001 certification.

It is good practice to carry out regular reviews of your environmental policy to ensure your activities continue to comply with the policy and you are on track to reach your environmental targets. You should keep your policy up to date as your operational processes change.

Implementing an environmental policy can have a positive impact on your business, such as improving cost control, improving the efficiency of your processes, and improve employees’ knowledge about their responsibilities.
