| Biodiesel can be used in modern fossil diesel engines on its own or mixed with fossil diesel at any concentration. It is produced by removing glycerine from raw oils and fats.
Biodiesel is currently produced in Europe from oilseed rape, canola oil or sunflower oil. In North America it is produced from Soya Oil and Animal Fats. EU production is around around 5.713,000 tonnes mainly in France, Italy, Germany and Austria.

It has been used successfully in countries across Europe including:
• Austria (since 1988) : in trucks, tractors and boats and in diesel engines running in environmentally sensitive areas. • France : for many years buses have been running on a mixture of biodiesel and fossil diesel. • Germany : there are more than 700 filling stations selling bio-blend diesel. • Holland, Denmark, Norway, Switzerland, Luxembourg, Portugal and Spain : used in public transport. • In Northern Ireland 100 Filling Stations sell 5% blended bio-diesel under the "Maxol" brand. |
