In 2003 the UK Government set out its energy strategy in a White Paper entitled ‘Our Energy Future – Creating a Low Carbon Economy’ This strategy for the country’s energy policy set out the following four goals:
• To put ourselves on a path to cut the UK’s
Co2 emissions by some 60% by about 2050,
  with real progress by 2020.
• To maintain the reliability of energy supplies
• To promote competitive markets in the UK
and beyond, thereby helping to raise the rate
of sustainable economic growth and to
  improve our productivity
• To ensure every home is adequately
  and affordably heated.

Since the White Paper was published the government has announced a new Renewable Transport Fuels Obligation. The report recommends an objective of 5% of transport fuel sold in the UK to have come from renewable sources by 2013/14.

These Government policies will help stimulate the already growing biofuel market. Overall biofuel sales in the UK account for 2.1% of road fuels.
