| Since the worldwide recognition of global warming and the Kyoto Protocol there has been widespread movement towards lowering reliance on fossil fuels such as coal, oil and gas as sources of energy. As a consequence, the drift across the civilised world is now towards seeking alternative sources of renewable energy. Fossil fuels have long been available as a cheap and convenient source of energy within the UK. However, the burning of fossil fuels is known to be the most significant source of emissions of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases which contribute to global warming. |
The natural greenhouse effect keeps the earth about 33 degrees centigrade warmer than it otherwise would be and adding carbon dioxide to an atmosphere will result in making a planet’s surface warmer. The oil crisis of 1973 reawakened interest in alternative transport fuels and a report in November 1997 to the International Energy Agency forecasts a major crisis for fossil fuel availability and price in 2010-2020. Global warming is an important reason for everyone to move away from a transport-reliant on fossil fuels toward a sustainable sources as long-term replacements for fossil fuels. Bio-fuel is an appropriate long-term alternative. |
